The Legislative Council approved funding for expansion of Cyberport last Friday. The decision will result in the loss of 20% of the park area for a building, access road and elevated walkways. It also opens the way for permanent ownership of the park by Cyberport. Besides conference facilities and offices, the new building will offer alfresco dining, public toilets and water fountains. In response to feed-back from residents the roof top will be lowered by 3 meters. Construction will start Q4 of 2021 for completion in 2025.
Funding has been set aside for new grass and repaving the promenade in the park. Compensation for the loss of the park area is still absent. Cyberport and the Innovation and Technology Bureau have yet to confirm waterfront enhancements the community has been asking for.

Cyberport has committed itself to consulting the community and district council. The master layout plan for the building will have to be approved by the Town Planning Board. We are asking the Lands Department how they will determine the requirements to incorporate in the leases for the park and the building.
Tell us what you want in the park
Our cartoon above reflects the questions we received. When will the waterfront between Sandy Bay and Cyberport be connected? Will there be a roof for shade over the concrete pier? What play and skating facilities will there be for kids and where?
Cyberport's drawings provoke new questions too. Is the road access through the park for emergency use only? Will the elevated walkway create obstacle in the park? Why have the trees and grass along the waterfront been replaced with concrete?
