We thank the residents who took pictures and videos of container vessel 'MIRAMARIN' emitting dark smoke continuously for over 3 minutes while sailing up East Lamma Channel on 6 September 2018. The Marine Department has now sufficient evidence and initiated prosecution against the ship master.
New laws comes into effect on 1 January 2019 whereby all vessels must use low sulphur fuel when sailing or berthing in Hong Kong waters. It is expected that the emissions of sulphur dioxide and respirable suspended particulates from Ocean Going Vessels will be reduced by 70%.
